EPA Approves $778,620 for West Virginia Drinking Water Programs

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved a $778,620 grant to West Virginia’s public water system supervision program to help protect drinking water supplies. West Virginia will contribute $1. 4 million in matching state funds.

“In listening to the concerns of water suppliers in small towns and cities, we have confidence that this grant program will help bring Americans the cleanest, safest drinking water in the world.” said Thomas C. Voltaggio, acting regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic Region.

EPA’s funding will help public water systems in West Virginia comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act by providing technical assistance, operator training, field surveillance, laboratory certification, and information to water system owners about new regulatory responsibilities.

The grant goes directly to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, which manages the program, and initiates enforcement actions against public water suppliers who fail to comply with state and federal regulations.

There are over 1,400 public water systems in West Virginia, serving over 1.8 million people.
