WEDNESDAY: EPA to Celebrate Progress at Escambia Treating Company Superfund Site; Last of “Mount Dioxin” to Be Removed

(ATLANTA – July 7, 2009) On Wednesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will celebrate $2.5 million in new funding awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to accelerate the cleanup and eventual reuse of the Escambia Treating Company Superfund site. EPA conducted a removal action in 1991 to stabilize the site, building a 225,000 cubic yard soil stockpile that became known in the community as "Mount Dioxin." Tomorrow, the last of the dioxin-contaminated soil stockpile will be removed and placed in a secure containment cell. Another milestone to be celebrated is the successful cleanup of off-site contamination and the completion of residential relocations. Because the risk of exposure to contaminated soil has been eliminated, EPA can confirm that human exposure is under control at the site.
