- Denver -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today added the Intermountain Waste Oil Refinery site in Bountiful, Utah, to EPA’s National Priorities List (NPL) of Superfund Sites. This announcement follows a 60-day period during which citizens were given the opportunity to comment on the proposed listing.
The Intermountain Waste Oil Refinery is on about two acres at 955 South 500 West in Bountiful. The site operated from 1957 until closing in 1993. The company processed waste oil from facilities in Utah and several surrounding states. Waste oil was treated onsite and then mostly sent to area cement plants for use as fuel in cement kilns as well as at coal mines to reduce dust. The waste sludge material from the process was sent to local landfills.
Oil and refinery wastes are visible on the site. Contaminants such as volatile organic compounds have been observed on the site and in the groundwater underlying the site. Regional municipal drinking water wells are within a four mile radius of the site and could become contaminated with these compounds.
Listing the site provides immediate funding for cleanup work and also guarantees the public an opportunity to participate in cleanup decisions.
