Boston - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MA DEP) are hosting a public information meeting on Thursday, June 16th at 7:00 pm at the Mansfield Town Hall to discuss EPA’s proposed plan for future clean-up activities at the proposed Hatheway & Patterson Superfund Site. Thirty-six acres of the 38 acre site are located in Mansfield, MA., while the remaining 2 acres are in neighboring Foxborough, MA.
From 1953 to 1993, the Hatheway & Patterson Company used the site to treat wood using solutions of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in fuel oil, as well as copper, chromium and arsenic. These contaminants have been found in site soils and groundwater.
The main components of the proposed cleanup plan include: stabilization and consolidation of a portion of the contaminated soils that exceed cleanup criteria for under a low permeability cover; off-site disposal of the remainder of the contaminated soils, long-term monitoring of contaminated groundwater, and institutional controls on future land and groundwater uses at the Site. The estimated cost is $12,127,000.00
A 30 Day comment period on the proposed cleanup plan will start on June 17th and end on July 18, 2005.
The company ceased operations in April 1993 after having filed for bankruptcy in February 1993.
The Hatheway & Patterson site was proposed for inclusion on the National Priorities List (NPL or Superfund) in September of 2001. The NPL is EPA’s list of the of the country’s most serious hazardous waste sites identified for possible long-term cleanup. The Superfund program makes public funds available to clean up listed toxic waste sites when private financing is unavailable.
