EPA Announces Environmental Education Funding in Delaware

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced 20 environmental education grants awarded throughout the mid-Atlantic region. In Delaware, EPA awarded a $20,000 grant to the Center for Inland Bays based in Lewes.

The project, called Integrating Inland Bays Education with Delaware Science Content Standards, gives local students an opportunity to participate in outdoor learning activities at the James Farm Ecological Preserve. The preserve is a 150-acre, county-owned property situated on the Indian River Bay, near Ocean View.

The Center for the Inland Bays has leased the property since autumn 1998, developing it into an ecological preserve. Educational programs offered at the James Farm meet the state science standards for 7th Grade “Understanding Delaware Wetlands” and 8th grade “Ecosystems.”

“We support this environmental education project to help people understand how their actions affect natural ecosystems and how positive steps can improve the overall environment,” said mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh.

Since 1992, EPA has provided more than $2 million annually in funding to local organizations and schools and has awarded a total of 1,700 grants. These grass-roots grants fund educational programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
