PHILADELPHIA – K & L Plating Co. of Lancaster, Pa. has signed a compliance order with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency agreeing to comply within 45 days with environmental regulations governing the company's metal plating operations.
The company electroplates steel parts with nickel, chrome and zinc for small machine shops and tool and die manufacturers. K&L failed to notify the EPA, as required by federal environmental regulations, when it changed its operation to decorative plating. The company also did not conduct the required monitoring to measure the air emissions.
K&L also has not done the required daily monitoring of its equipment or kept records of this monitoring. And the company failed to have an operations and maintenance plan on site.
The above violations were discovered during a January 2001 inspection of the facility by the EPA and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
