EPA Recognizes Four New Mexico Organizations for Environmental Excellence

The Region 6 office of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented its annual Environmental Excellence Awards Feb. 8 to: Mr. Tim Aydelott and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque; the Albuquerque Transit Department; Ms. Judy Kowalski of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department in Santa Fe and; the Albuquerque Public Works Department.
Environmental Excellence Awards recognize and encourage outstanding environmental protection efforts by individuals, non-profit organizations, companies and governments.
"We are glad to see the outstanding results from these worthy programs. New Mexico should be proud of the lasting impact its industry, governments and volunteers have generated to benefit the environment. The EPA is glad to have them as its partners in protecting human health and the environment," EPA Regional Administrator Gregg Cooke said.
New Mexico Environment Department Secretary Peter Maggiore said, "Partnerships are indeed the theme of the Environmental Excellence Awards. In each of the recognized achievements, individuals, communities and governments have worked together with the common aim of enhancing environmental quality. The New Mexico Environment Department is pleased to join with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in this annual highlighting of program excellence."
EPA recognized Mr. Tim Aydelott and his associates at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque for developing the Electronic Bridge Project, which combines ecology education and technology to enhance math and science teaching materials.
EPA recognized Albuquerque's Transit Department for developing the "Kids In Motion Program" to increase young students' awareness of transportation alternatives and air quality in the Albuquerque area.
EPA recognized Ms. Judy Kowalski of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department in Santa Fe for her leadership in waste reduction, reuse, and recycling procurement.
EPA recognized the Albuquerque Public Works Department for excellence in industrial wastewater pretreatment, including pollution prevention, waste minimization and outreach to industrial customers. Albuquerque's pretreatment program also participates in Project XL, a national innovation initiative sponsored by EPA.
