FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
No. 08-OPA016
CHICAGO (Feb. 12, 2008) -U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has reached an agreement with SABCO Industries Inc., Toledo, Ohio, on alleged violations of federal hazardous waste regulations. The company will pay a $10,000 penalty.
SABCO, formerly located at 4511 South Ave., cleaned and reconditioned stainless steel kegs, converted soda tank containers for beer industry use and manufactured miniature brewing equipment. In the course of operations, it generated waste including but not limited to nitric acid, chromium and paint strippings.
The company was cited for violating the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act requirements for managing hazardous waste. Specifically, EPA cited SABCO on nine counts including failing to obtain a storage permit, determine if the waste was hazardous and maintain unobstructed aisle space. The company also allegedly failed to institute a contingency plan, train personnel, keep records and notify state and local emergency response departments.
EPA regulates hazardous waste from production to final disposal.
