U.S. EPA ADMINISTRATOR BROWNER AND ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF THE ARMY
LANCASTER TO CHAIR WORKSHOP ON LAKE TAHOE WATER QUALITY


U.S. EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner and Assistant Secretary of the Army
(Civil Works) H. Martin Lancaster will chair a workshop on Lake Tahoe’s water
quality at the Tallac Historic Site on the edge of Lake Tahoe in California on
June 18, 1997.  The water quality workshop is one of three workshops being held
by Clinton Administration officials in preparation for the Lake Tahoe
Presidential Forum to be hosted by the President and Vice President on July 25 and 26.  

At the workshop, Browner and Lancaster will be joined by state,
local and tribal officials, representatives from citizen, environmental
and local business groups, and members of the community to discuss the
challenges of protecting the health of the lake while maintaining economic
growth, and to reaffirm the shared federal, state, tribal and community
commitment to Lake Tahoe.  The July 25-26 Lake Tahoe Presidential Forum
will address the serious economic and environmental challenges facing
Lake Tahoe and focus on strategies for protecting the lake and its
communities for the next generation of Americans.  The other two issue
workshops leading up to the    Presidential Forum include Forest Ecosystem
Restoration, Recreation and Tourism on Monday, July 30; and Transportation
on Saturday in mid-July.

Directions:  To tour of Truckee Marsh, take Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to
Tahoe Keys Blvd.  Take Tahoe Keys Blvd. to Venice Drive and turn right on to
Venice Drive. Continue to the end of the street and park in the cul-de-sac.  
To Tallac Historic Site from Truckee Marsh, take Highway 50 west to Highway 89.  
Turn right (north) on to Highway 89 (Emerald Bay Road) and continue approximately
