MEDIA ADVISORY: COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE AT PEMACO SUPERFUND SITE

    SAN FRANCISCO -- The public is invited to an open house on February 20 at 1:00 p.m to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency representatives and discuss the ongoing Superfund cleanup at the Pemaco site in Maywood, Calif..

     Information about the treatment system currently in operation at the Pemaco Superfund site will also be available.  Directly following the open house, the EPA will host an open discussion of the ongoing soil cleanup and the Superfund process at 3:00 p.m..

     Pemaco is a former chemical mixing plant.  In April 1998, the EPA conducted an emergency cleanup at Pemaco, removing 29 underground tanks and installing a soil cleanup system.  On January 19, the EPA formally added the Pemaco site to the list of Superfund national priority sites.  With emergency cleanup measures in place, the agency will now begin to investigate options for a long-term cleanup strategy to address soil and groundwater contamination.

WHAT: An open house that gives the public an opportunity to meet with the EPA's Pemaco Superfund Team and learn more about the site and the Superfund cleanup process.
