U.S. EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner will travel to Miami-Dade and Ft.
Lauderdale to participate in two Eastward Ho! “brownfield” revitalization events
on Monday, July 13.
Browner will tour a brownfield redevelopment project at the Poinciana Industrial Park in Miami-Dade County at 10:45 a.m. Following the tour, Browner will participate in a press conference to discuss Clinton Administration efforts to clean up and redevelop brownfields and revitalize communities across the nation.
Browner will then travel to Ft. Lauderdale to kick off the Eastward Ho! Brownfield Partnership Showcase Community project. Vice President Gore named Eastward Ho! one of the first 16 “showcase” communities to serve as models for federal, state, local and private sector cooperation for environmental protection and economic revitalization.
The Clinton Administration has taken a series of actions to clean up and redevelop brownfields -- abandoned, contaminated urban properties -- and return them to productive use, including providing nearly $22 million in seed money to 157 communities for revitalization. This spring, the Vice President designated 16 Brownfields Showcase Communities to receive $28 million from 15 federal agencies for innovative revitalization projects. Communities from Cleveland to Sacramento are gaining new jobs, a new tax base and new hope.
