FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 1997

EPA HOLDS MEETING TO REVIEW PESTICIDE RISK ASSESSMENT ISSUES

EPA Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) is meeting in Arlington, Va., March 19-20, to discuss some of the key scientific issues for assessing the risks of pesticides to public health or the environment, particularly in light of the requirements under the l996 Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA). The panel will meet at the Crystal Gateway Mariott Hotel, l700 Jefferson Davis Highway, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The SAP, made up of scientific experts from academia and private industry, was established under provisions of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act to peer review significant policy and scientific decisions of the Agency's pesticide program. The SAP panel will address two FQPA risk assessment issues: how best to assess risks posed by multiple chemicals which have a common mechanism of action or effect; and how to develop more accurate estimates of pesticide exposure from all sources, including exposure through the diet, in drinking water, or as a result of pesticide use in and around the home. Other science issues before the panel include a review of standard operating procedures for peer review of significant agency policies and decisions; how EPA evaluates available data to determine which routes of exposure and which potential adverse effects are most important for assessing risks to various population groups such as farm workers, children and homeowners; proposed testing requirements to assess potential effects of organophosphate pesticides on the eyes and visual system; and inhalation risk assessment methodologies. Copies of papers on each of the topics can be obtained by calling the Pesticide Programs Docket at 703-305-5805. Persons wanting to make an oral presentation before the SAP panel should call the Designated Federal Officer, Larry Dorsey: 703-305-5369/7351. Copies of the panel's report will be available approximately l5 working days after the meeting and may be obtained by contacting the Docket. This information will also be available on EPA's Internet home page (https://www.epa.gov/pesticides/lawsreg.html).
