GEMTEK PRODUCTS AGREE TO DEVELOP SAFER DETERGENTS AND CLEANERS
EPA and Gemtek Products of Phoenix, Ariz., have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which promotes the manufacture of a laundry detergent and a general purpose cleaner that will minimize environmental impact. The products will be specially formulated with compounds that will quickly biodegrade into nonpolluting byproducts. The Gemtek products, SC-Laundry and SC-1000 will not contain strong solvents, bleaches, builders, or compounds that deplete the oxygen of surface waters. EPA will provide technical advice and support to achieve continuous improvement in the detergent products. The company will also obtain test data from its chemical suppliers and encourage testing if data is insufficient to ensure product integrity. The voluntary agreement was established under EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) program. It engages industry sectors, including industrial and institutional laundry, automotive refinishing, garment care, electronics, and printing.
