Workshop Kicks Off EPA Brownfields Redevelopment in Gloucester City

(#01064) NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is holding a one-day workshop for local business, civic and community leaders on Thursday, June 7 to discuss innovative approaches to redevelopment in Gloucester City. The workshop, which will be held at City Hall in Gloucester City, will bring together national brownfields experts, local businesses, redevelopment officials and the community EPA supports communities across the country through its Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative - a national effort to renew industrial and commercial properties where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. Earlier this year, EPA selected the city of Gloucester for a brownfields redevelopment award of $200,000 to support the local effort to develop a brownfields site inventory, conduct site assessments, identify and remove barriers to the redevelopment of specific sites, plan site cleanups and incorporate community involvement into the brownfields redevelopment process. The workshop will be a kick-off for brownfields redevelopment in Gloucester City, where the municipality is targeting 188 acres within its Southport Area for brownfields redevelopment to bring employment to nearby residents and spur economic revitalization throughout the city. The federal attention directed at brownfields redevelopment reflects a growing realization that yesterdayss eyesore is todayss opportunity. For EPA, it is an opportunity to demonstrate that environmental protection can also promote economic development.
