SUPERFUND ADMINISTRATIVE REFORMS REPORT
The Superfund program is making significant progress in cleaning up hazardous waste sites and protecting public health and the environment. These successes are highlighted in the “Superfund Administrative Reforms Report for FY 1998.” EPA’s accomplishments include: accelerated the pace of cleanups to achieve construction completion status at about 47 percent of non-federal facility National Priorities List (NPL) sites; an additional 30 percent of non-federal facility NPL sites had their cleanup remedy under construction; achieved commitments by potentially responsible parties of over $15 billion to conduct response work and reimburse Agency costs, saving taxpayers’ money; streamlined the remedy selection process, producing estimated future cost savings of $1 billion; facilitated productive use at numerous sites by removing over 30,000 sites from the Superfund inventory; awarded 227 Brownfields Pilot grants to communities throughout the United States; removed 18,000 small contributors from the Superfund liability system; and established over 45 community advisory groups and awarded over 200 technical assistance grants. The report will be available on April 7 at: https://www.epa.gov/superfund/programs/reforms or by calling the Superfund Hotline at 1-800-424-9346 or 703-412-9810.
