EPA awards $1 million to Prince George’s County, Md.to help protect Anacostia Watershed

PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $1 million grant to Prince George’s County, Md. to support low maintenance landscaping projects that will help protect the Anacostia watershed from storm water runoff.

“Along with benefitting water quality in the Anacostia watershed, these projects serve as a model that other municipalities can use to develop smart solutions to protect watersheds. Prince George’s County’s projects will demonstrate how simplistic techniques can improve the water quality of storm water runoff while improving the community’s quality of life, ” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The county will use funding to support projects that focus on controlling runoff in priority sections of the Anacostia River. This will include three highway sites along the Maryland Route 201 median section at Interstate 95 (I-95); Maryland Route 201 interchange over I-95; and U.S. Route 1 interchange over I-95.

The Anacostia River watershed covers about 176 square miles including northern Prince George’s County and eastern Montgomery County in Maryland, and roughly from Georgia Avenue eastward in Washington, D.C.
