FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1996
WASTEWI$E PARTNERS RECOGNIZED AT THE
NATIONAL WASTEWI$E FORUM
On Sept. 9, EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner will recognize 87 companies and individuals for their outstanding accomplishments in the WasteWi$e program at a ceremony at the WasteWi$e Forum. The ceremony will be held at noon at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel, 1700 Jefferson Davis Highway, Grand Ballroom, Salons A & B, Arlington, Va. The Administrator will also honor 82 new companies that joined the program in 1996. EPA launched WasteWi$e in January 1994 as a voluntary partnership program, which is designed to help businesses find practical methods for reducing municipal solid waste. In 1995 WasteWi$e partners conserved nearly 344,000 tons of materials through waste prevention activities, which is a 40 percent increase over 1994 efforts. In addition, partners quadrupled the reported amount of materials collected for recycling to more than four million tons. These actions saved these companies an estimated $75 million in avoided purchasing and operating costs. Close to 480 companies are currently members of the program, one-third of which are Fortune 500 manufacturing or services companies. Partners are located nationwide and span 35 industrial sectors. Upon joining the program, WasteWi$e partners commit to achieve results in waste prevention, recyclables collection and purchase or manufacture of recycled products.
