CONNECTICUT COMPANY VIOLATES HAZARDOUS WASTE LAWS
M.C.M. Real Corp. of Stafford Springs, Conn., pleaded guilty on July 16 in U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut in New Haven of violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. M.C.M. was formed in 1988 to renovate a former textile manufacturing facility in Stafford Springs that had been operated by Gaynor Stafford Industries. Between 1992 and 1994, M.C.M. obtained several estimates for the removal of numerous containers of flammable hazardous wastes and two open vats of acid which had been abandoned at the facility. However, M.C.M. did not conduct the clean-up, and in March 1996, EPA’s Superfund spent $560,570.11 to clean up the abandoned chemicals. The court fined M.C.M. $280,000 and ordered it to reimburse EPA for the cost of the Superfund clean-up when the corporation entered its guilty plea. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, and was prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.
