College of William and Mary Awarded EPA Environmental Education Grant

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced 20 environmental education grants awarded throughout the mid-Atlantic region. In Williamsburg, Va., EPA awarded $13,256 to the College of William and Mary.

The program EPA is funding is called Turning Adversity into Opportunity: Linking Environmental Education Programs to Virginia’s Standards of Learning.

“This program will teach teachers new ways to incorporate environmental education
into their existing science curriculum, hopefully increasing Virginia students’ knowledge of environmental science,” said mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh.

Through teacher-training workshops, the program will strengthen the teaching skills of primary school teachers by showing them how they can enhance their science curriculum by incorporating environmental education programs. These workshops will introduce teachers to the federal programs, illustrate how these programs will help students achieve the science standards of learning, and provide teachers with information and materials that will help them incorporate these programs into their existing curricula.

Since 1992, EPA has provided more than $2 million annually in funding to local organizations and schools and has awarded a total of 1,700 grants. These grass-roots grants fund educational programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
