Sharretts Plating Co. to pay $71,100 for Hazardous Waste Violations

EMIGSVILLE, Pa. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that it has settled its complaint against Sharretts Plating Co. Inc. for violating federal and state hazardous waste regulations at its Emigsville, Pa. electroplating plant.
Under the settlement agreement, Sharretts must pay a penalty of $71,110 and certify its compliance with federal, state and local laws and requirements regarding the generation, management, treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste.
EPA’s complaint cited the company for several violations of the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and authorized Pennsylvania hazardous waste management regulations, including:
• failing to file required annual reports in 1995 through 1998 on hazardous wastes exported to Canada;
• failing to respond to EPA information requests;
• inadequate recordkeeping on hazardous waste shipments;
• storage of hazardous waste over 90 days without a permit;
• storage of hazardous waste in open containers; and
• inadequate and outdated emergency contingency plan.
As part of the settlement, the company neither admitted nor denied the violations alleged in the complaint.
