EPA to fund underground tank cleanups in area

Denver -- The State of Montana and the Crow Tribe will each receive $100,000 to assess contamination and clean up the sites of abandoned underground storage tanks (USTs) as part of a national program announced earlier today in Philadelphia by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Deputy Administrator Linda Fisher.

The sites are among 40 nationally that will share in some $3.8 million targeted at cleaning up gas and petroleum tanks at idle or abandoned commercial properties.

Montana’s Department of Environmental Quality will work with the City of Billings to clean up tank locations along the First Avenue South Corridor. The City plans to redevelop the area to accommodate a mix of homes and businesses.

The Crow Tribe will work with EPA’s Region 8 in Denver and the Little Horn Bank on a project to clean up contamination from an abandoned gas station at the Pryor Trading Post on the Reservation. Two USTs were removed there in 1999. The work now involves defining the extent of the contamination left behind.

When the site is cleaned up, the Tribe will redevelop the former gas station into a community center.
