HAZARDOUS WASTE TRANSPORTER CHARGED
Syvalia Satterfield was charged in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland on April 29 with one count of knowingly storing hazardous dry cleaning waste at an unpermitted facility in violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. In addition, Satterfield was also charged with one count of knowingly storing hazardous waste at two unpermitted facilities in the District of Columbia. The charges allege that Satterfield operated a hazardous waste transporting business known as Growth Enterprises Inc. Satterfield allegedly represented Growth Enterprises to be a licensed transporter of hazardous waste and took spent dry cleaning solvents and transported them without a license to unpermitted facilities. These facilities included a public storage facility in Silver Spring, Md., the balcony of Satterfield's apartment building and the backyard of an associate's home in the District of Columbia. Satterfield faces a maximum of five years of imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $250,000 on each charge. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division.
