(ATLANTA – January 11, 2007) EPA began work in December 2006 to stabilize hazardous waste at the American Creosote Works, Inc. NPL Site in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi. This action is intended to stabilize the site by containing the release of contaminants that may pose a threat to human health and the environment through offsite migration.
A release of hazardous substances (creosote and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) occurred at the Site and has contaminated surface and subsurface soils as well as sediments in Hughes Creek. Investigations have been conducted to determine other potential hazardous substance migration pathways from the facility.
The action will likely be completed by April 2007. The current estimated cost for the cleanup is approximately $1,500,000.
The American Creosote Works, Inc. NPL Site is located on Railroad Avenue, but is divided into two areas by Baremore Street. This action will be isolated to the area of the property north of Baremore Street. The site is located within the city limits of Louisville, Mississippi in a commercial/residential area.
