EPA settles with Lockheed Martin on PCB violations

CHICAGO (May 10, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has settled a civil administrative action with Lockheed Martin Corp., Akron, Ohio, for violation of federal rules on PCBs. The company will pay a $66,700 penalty.

Lockheed reported to EPA the presence of PCBs over allowed concentrations in its Akron Airdock facility, 1210 Massillon Road, and in dust and soil around the plant. The company has since done a voluntary interim cleanup and is investigating interior and exterior contamination for future cleanup.

PCBs are a group of toxic chemicals, once used in industry as coolants and lubricants. EPA banned the manufacture of PCBs in 1979 because of evidence that they accumulate in the environment and present health hazards for people.

Under the Toxic Substances Control Act, EPA regulates the proper cleanup, disposal, marking, recordkeeping, storage and limited use of PCBs to protect the public from these potentially dangerous chemicals.
