EPA SOLICITS RESEARCH PROPOSALS ON HEALTH EFFECTS OF ARSENIC
EPA is requesting grant and contract applications to conduct research on human health effects associated with exposure to low levels of arsenic. The research program is the result of a joint agreement among EPA, the American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AWWARF) and the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA). Four research areas are specified in the Request for Applications: the contribution of arsenic from food sources, arsenic metabolism in humans, data to improve the current understanding of how arsenic causes cancer and early effects in humans exposed to low doses of arsenic. Research developed through this program will assist EPA in its efforts to assess and revise its current drinking water standard for arsenic, as required by the 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. EPA will provide approximately $2 million, and AWWARF and ACWA will fund approximately $1 million in support of the program. The Request for Applications was released on March 27, and is available on the Internet at https://www.epa.gov/ncerqa. The deadline for submitting applications is May 16.
