NASA White Sands Test Facility has joined with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) in an agreement to implement an extensive Internet-based information management and regulatory reporting system as part of EPA's Project XL program.
EPA Deputy Regional Administrator Jerry Clifford, NASA Facility Manager Joseph Fries, and NMED Deputy Secretary Paul Ritzma signed the facility's Final Project Agreement Friday, Sept. 22.
The proposed Internet-based system will provide the EPA and multiple NMED Bureaus with real-time access to regulatory reports, historical site information including ground water database archives, graphical interpretations of site conditions, and cross-media environmental compliance information and reports.
EPA's Project XL allows local agencies to test innovative methods for achieving better and more cost-effective protection of public health and the environment. This national pilot project allows flexibility in meeting environmental regulations in exchange for enhanced environmental protection.
