Calvert County Teachers Will Mentor With Scientists Under Environmental Education Grant From EPA

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. -- Calvert County Public Schools have been awarded a $5,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, mid-Atlantic region, to set up a unique mentorship program that will have elementary school teachers in grades one through five working with environmental scientists for one week.

Under the program, which will be held next summer, 10 teachers will spend a week with scientists from either the Academy of Natural Sciences or the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to study area environmental issues. The teachers will then share what they learn with other teachers and develop related classroom activities for their students.

"This type of a mentorship program can give the teachers a hands-on learning experience about environmental issues that they can transfer to their students," said W. Michael McCabe, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. In the mid-Atlantic region, 25 grant recipients include schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations. Nationally, $3 million was awarded in 1999.
