PHILADELPHIA -- The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a
$435,500 grant to Logan Township, Blair County, Pa. to help pay for the expansion and upgrade of the Greenwood wastewater treatment plant.

The current plant, which serves Logan and Antis townships, is too small to handle flows from the two communities. The upgrades will increase the plant’s capacity from 700,000 gallons per day to 1.2 million gallons per day, and alleviate problems of raw sewage overflowing into the Little Juniata River during periods of wet weather.

“This grant will help these communities protect water quality by eliminating potential health hazards associated with inadequate wastewater treatment,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The upgrades will also revise the process for treating ammonia and nitrogen so that the facility can meet more stringent discharge limits.

The grant will reimburse the township for 55 percent of the project’s construction costs. The balance will be paid with local funds.
