EPA PROPOSES TO CHANGE PESTICIDE RESIDUE LIMITS
FOR SEVERAL IMPORTED AND DOMESTIC FOOD COMMODITIES

EPA is proposing to change more than 100 tolerances (residue limits) that it had previously established for six pesticides used on a variety of food crops, including crops grown both domestically and in other countries. For the majority of food crops EPA is proposing to lower existing pesticide residue limits, but the Agency also is proposing to revoke 29 residue limits. The six pesticides that would be affected by these proposed changes include four herbicides (metribuzin, dichlobenil, pendimethalin, terbacil); one insecticide (sulprofos); and a growth regulator (diphenylamine). EPA is proposing to adjust or revoke tolerances for these pesticides for many reasons. The adjustments are needed to meet new safety standards required by the Food Quality Protection Act and also reflect new use patterns for the products. The revocations are being proposed primarily because manufacturers of the pesticides have failed to maintain or support certain registered uses for their products. The Agency is interested in receiving comments regarding existing stocks, particularly for tolerances that have been proposed for revocation. The proposal was published on Oct. 16 and comments will be accepted for the next 60 days. The proposal can be viewed on EPA’s website at: www.epa.gov/homepage/fedrgstr.
