Stemco LP Joins EPA Partnership, Pledges Hazardous Waste Reductions

(Dallas, Texas - May 18, 2006) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency presented a plaque today to Stemco LP in Longview, Texas, marking its entrance into the National Partnership for Environmental Priorities. Stemco LP has entered this voluntary program by pledging to reduce 36,000 pounds of toluene and 18,000 pounds of methyl ethyl ketone from the waste it generates.

"Using innovative approaches to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals is a good environmental strategy," EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene said. "By joining this program, Stemco is not only protecting public health and the environment, but showing good economic and business sense."

The NPEP is a voluntary waste minimization program that encourages public and private organizations to form voluntary partnerships with EPA to reduce the use or release of 31 priority chemicals beyond the requirements of environmental regulations. These chemicals are long-lasting substances that can harm humans and the environment.

"Stemco is excited about partnering with the EPA to reduce releases of hazardous chemicals into the environment," Stemco Environmental Coordinator Larry Minton said. "We have a corporate goal to generate zero hazardous waste. This NPEP project, to convert our leather seal manufacturing process from organic solvents to a water basis, is a critical part of achieving that goal."
