THE LEARNING PREP SCHOOL IN NEWTON RECEIVES ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD

BOSTON -- More than 1,000 students attended EPA-New England's Annual Earth Artists Ceremony to receive honor and recognition from EPA's Deputy Regional Administrator Mindy Lubber for the artwork reflecting what they learned about the environment. Joining EPA were the cheerleaders for the New England Patriots who performed for the students.

The Learning Center located at 1507 Washington Street. in W. Newton was among this year's winners from Massachusetts. EPA receives hundreds of entries of poems and posters from across New England each year.

"These young children should be very proud of themselves as I'm sure their teacher is," said Mindy Lubber, EPA-New England's deputy regional administrator. "They worked very hard this year and produced a beautiful poster that embodies the ethic that all children and adults alike should share - stewardship of our earth."

The students of Marcia Cooper's fourth grade class produced the winning poster enclosed with this release. The students are: Dennis Lee, Mark Yelinek, Darryl Messier, Haley Kingman, Amy Bradley and Stephanie Oliviera.

Thousands of New England school children participated in this program that fosters greater awareness and concern about the environment. Teachers set aside time for students in grades kindergarten through six to discuss environmental issues, and then prepare a poem or poster reflecting that theme.

The Learning Prep School's poster will be on display as part of the permanent collection at the EPA's Boston office.
