VIOLATING THE CLEAN WATER ACT
VIOLATING THE CLEAN WATER ACT
On Oct. 16, Mark Mayhue of Annville, Pa., former superintendent of the Norristown Wastewater Treatment Plant in Norristown, Pa., was sentenced to nine months in prison, one year of supervised release, 50 hours of community service, and ordered to pay a $2,000 fine in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Mayhue previously pleaded guilty to two felony counts and one misdemeanor count of violating the Clean Water Act for allowing a violation of the treatment plant’s wastewater discharge permit. Mayhue failed to remove approximately 150 tons of sewage sludge from wastewater discharged from the Norristown Plant into the Schuylkill River between January and March of 1994. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, Environmental Crimes Section, and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, with assistance from EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center.
