Federal, state and local officials will gather Thursday to kick off the cleanup of the Quinton Smelter Superfund site. A zinc smelter operated at the 65-acre site from about 1919 to about 1931, contaminated the area with heavy metals, particularly lead and arsenic. The cleanup will prevent further contamination from erosion and rain run-off and make the area safer for a planned regional school.
