EPA SUPERFUND REMOVAL UNDERWAY AT THE LAKEWOOD BATTERY SITE ATLANTA, FULTON COUNTY, GA

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has begun a Superfund hazardous substance removal at the Lakewood Battery site in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment.

The removal is taking place under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB) and will include:

excavation and stockpiling of lead contaminated soils;

transportation and disposal of contaminated soils; and

backfill and restoration of excavated areas as necessary.



The removal is expected to be completed by the end of June 1999 at an estimated cost of $250,000.

The Lakewood Battery site was used as a battery sales and service center from the 1950s to 1996. The site currently is abandoned. EPA was contacted by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division for site assessment and possible removal action. High levels of lead were found in the surface and shallow subsurface soils.
