- Denver -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 8 awarded a $7,270 grant this month to help fund a program at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota designed to teach Lakota students about energy alternatives that are environmentally sound, culturally appropriate and economically beneficial. The program was developed after the students expressed an interest and desire to learn about alternative energy solutions.
"These purpose of these grants is to help students of all ages and their teachers develop the capacity to make informed decisions that affect environmental quality," EPA's Region 8 Administrator Robert Roberts said.
The Environmental Education Grant Program is sponsored by the EPA's Office of Environmental Education in Washington D.C. Since 1992, EPA has received between $2 and $3 million in grant funding per year and has awarded approximately 2,500 grants. Grants of $25,000 or less are awarded in EPA's ten regional offices, and grants of more than $25,000 are awarded at EPA Headquarters in Washington D.C.
