EPA CITES CURTIS OIL FOR DRINKING WATER VIOLATIONS

LAFAYETTE, Pa. - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that it has cited Curtis Oil for violating the federal Safe Drinking Water Act at its oil recovery facility in Lafayette, McKean County, Pennsylvania.

EPA cited Curtis Oil for violating Safe Drinking Water Act regulations by allowing oil brine from its underground injection wells to enter the groundwater and a tributary of the Lewis Run. Curtis Oil was also cited for failing to properly maintain its wells, report mechanical integrity failures to EPA, as well as failing to properly identify and plug abandoned wells at its facility. EPA has ordered Curtis Oil to pay a $3,000 fine, abandon and plug the remaining leaking well, review its operations for any additional leaks, and report its findings.

The company has 30 days to appeal this order.
