EPA REGISTERS REDUCED RISK COCKROACH BAIT

EPA has registered the new reduced risk active ingredients xanthine and oxypurinol which are combined for use in cockroach bait stations. The new product is a safer alternative to traditional pesticides used to control cockroaches. Acting together, xanthine and oxypurinol interfere with metabolic processes needed for cockroach growth and reproduction. The cockroach bait is manufactured by Dominion BioSciences Inc. in Blacksburg, Va. The product attracts and controls cockroaches in indoor environments, including homes, schools, hospitals and food processing facilities. The active ingredients are inside a bait station that can be placed anywhere indoors, especially in damp places favored by cockroaches. Exposure is expected to be minimal, therefore not harmful, to humans or pets, because the active ingredients are enclosed in a sealed bait station. The registration of this product is part of EPA's efforts to protect human health and the environment by registering safer pesticides. EPA also emphasizes the importance of a sanitary home environment (maintaining clean food preparation areas, not leaving dirty dishes in the sink, controlling pet food availability, etc.) to reduce the presence of cockroaches and thus the need for chemical intervention.
