EPA, OREGON, WASHINGTON APPROVE CLEANUP PLAN
FOR LOWER COLUMBIA RIVER ESTUARY
FOR LOWER COLUMBIA RIVER ESTUARY
EPA and the states of Oregon and Washington have agreed to a cleanup plan for the Lower Columbia River Estuary. On Oct. 20, the final Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) was signed by EPA and the two state governors. CCMPs are environmental management blueprints outlining commitments by all participants to undertake specific financial, institutional and policy action to protect and preserve vital coastal resources. The Columbia River CCMP includes provisions for limiting development in the floodway, maintaining natural buffers, retaining storm water and restoring 10,000 acres of wetlands. The Lower Columbia River Estuary was added to the National Estuary Program in l996. There are 28 estuaries currently in the National Estuary Program and this is the 20 CCMP to be approved by EPA. Additional information is available from EPA’s estuary web site at: https://www.epa.gov/owow, or by calling Jamal Kadri at 202-260-3848 or Deborah Marriot at the Lower Columbia River Estuary Program at 503-229-5421.
