PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will add four mid-Atlantic hazardous waste sites to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) tomorrow, and propose the addition of one other site. Nationwide, EPA is adding 15 sites and proposing to add 11 sites.
The four sites being added to the NPL in the mid-Atlantic region are:
- the Former Nanse-mond Ordnance Depot in Suffolk, Va.
- the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va.
- the Kim-Stan Landfill in Selma, Alleghany County, Va., and
- the Hanlin-Allied-Olin site in Mounds-ville, Marshall County, W.Va.
The Old Wilmington Road Ground Water Contamination site in Sadsburyville, Chester County, Pa.is being proposed for addition to the NPL.
The NPL is a list of the nation’s most serious uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites. NPL sites are eligible for cleanup by EPA. The Superfund trust fund was established in 1980 to finance hazardous waste cleanups with taxes generated from chemical and waste producing industries.
Once a site has been proposed to the NPL, there is a 60-day public comment period. The proposed listing can become final after the EPA responds to all the public comments in writing. For the newly proposed site, the 60-day public comment period begins tomorrow, coinciding with the notice appearing in the Federal Register. This comment period will end on September 20, 1999.
