BOSTON – EPA New England announces the availability of grant funds through the Healthy Urban Communities Grant Program. This is a new partnership between EPA's Urban Environmental Initiative, Children's Environmental Health Protection Program and Smart Growth Program.

These grant funds seek to support projects that will lead to healthy, livable, and safe urban communities by:

    • restoring and revitalizing urban areas,
    • employing smarter patterns of growth,
    • reducing children's exposure to harmful toxins or allergens, and
    • improving the quality of life and public health for residents.
EPA seeks proposals that will benefit residents living in the region's urban areas. Urban areas is defined in this proposal as cities or communities with a population of at least 35,000 people. Awards will range from $5,000 to $30,000 for each project. EPA expects to award approximately 10-15 grants through this competitive program.

The Request for Proposals is available from EPA's web site at www.epa.gov/ne/grants/healthyurban.html. Interested applicants may request a proposal by calling Sandy Padula at (617) 918-1797.
