Glens Falls to Receive EPA Grant to Evaluate Brownfields Sites

(#03088) NEW YORK, N.Y. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today presented the city of Glens Falls, New York, a $200,000 grant to inventory and assess contaminated industrial sites in the Hudson River-Elm Street corridor. These sites, often called brownfields, are properties that may face difficulty being reused or redeveloped because they are either contaminated or people think they are contaminated. “Through the Brownfields Program, abandoned and underutilized facilities can be cleaned up and returned to productive use,” said EPA Regional Administrator Jane M. Kenny. “With today’s grant, Glen Cove gains additional assistance for its efforts to revitalize and redevelop its brownfields, ultimately making this community safer and creating jobs.” Under the 2002 Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants and job training grants. This legislation gives communities the tools they need to reclaim and restore thousands of brownfield sites, including low-risk petroleum sites. It also allows local governments and nonprofit organizations to apply for funding, greatly expanding eligibility for assistance. $166.6 million was set aside for brownfields grants in 2003.
