NEW GRANTS DIRECTED AT IMPROVING
ENVIRONMENT IN BALTICS
ENVIRONMENT IN BALTICS
As part of the Department of State’s Northern European Initiative, EPA will work with the Baltic Sea States in two new projects directed at resolving environmental problems common to the Great Lakes and the Baltic Sea Watershed systems. The new Great Lakes-Baltic Sea Partnership will focus on watershed management and the causes and impacts of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants in both water bodies and on the transport of exotic species, which often threaten existing biological systems. In the second project, EPA will work jointly with Sweden to support the establishment of a Defense Environmental Training Center in Nemencine, Lithuania. The Center will provide training for military and civil defense personnel who have environmental responsibilities and will serve as a regional facility for all the Baltic countries, and in the future, for Russia and Poland.
