NEW ENERGY STAR AWARD FOR HEAT AND POWER PROJECTS
As part of the Earth Technologies Forum being held this week in Washington, D.C., EPA today announced a new Energy Star award for outstanding U.S. projects that simultaneously generate electricity and heat and other energy products from the same fuel source. EPA foresees the projects taking place primarily at hospitals, schools and heavy and light industrial facilities. These combined heat and power (CHP) projects (cogeneration) are more efficient than traditional power systems because they don’t waste electrical generation by-products, but instead use them for other purposes, such as heating, cooling and mechanical power. For instance, a school could generate its own power for classroom lighting while at the same time funneling the heat by-product from such generation to its lunchroom for warmth. CHP is a cost effective way to mitigate air pollution and global warming emissions. The Clinton Administration has set a national target of doubling U.S. CHP capacity by 2010; EPA’s award will be given annually to those who help achieve this goal. Attaining the target would reduce greenhouse gases by 30 million metric tons by 2010. Applications for the Energy Star CHP awards must be submitted by February 1, 2000; winners will be announced in March 2000.
