EPA ADMINISTRATOR, OFFICIALS AND LOCAL PARTNERS TO COMMEMORATE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CLEAN WATER ACT

On Friday, Oct. 18, U.S. EPA Administrator Christie Whitman, other agency officials, and representatives from national and local environmental and governmental organizations will participate in events around the country to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, National Water Monitoring Day and Children’s Health Month.

In New Jersey, Administrator Whitman will participate in an event with local school children at Liberty State Park, arriving in EPA’s survey vessel, the Clean Waters. After the ceremony that includes water testing, participants and reporters will board the boat for a tour.

In the Washington, D. C., area, EPA Deputy Administrator Linda Fisher and other officials will participate in an event on the Potomac River in Old Town Alexandria. Participants, including national and local officials and local college students, also will take a boat trip to learn water quality monitoring techniques, study pollution impacts and learn about wetlands at Dyke Marsh. Reporters are also invited to join the boat trip.

Nationally, Oct. 18 marks a milestone in the nation’s efforts to protect and restore valuable water resources. Around the country, EPA officials and other water experts will talk about the accomplishments of the Clean Water Act and the challenges that lie ahead. Friday also has been designated National Water Monitoring Day to acknowledge the contributions of more than half a million volunteers who regularly monitor water quality. This Friday, thousands of citizens, students, volunteer water monitoring organizations and water professionals from around the country will be monitoring their local rivers, streams, lake, bays and wetlands.
