FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Boise State University has reached an $11,175 settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over an EPA complaint alleging violations of the Federal Clean Air Act and of the Toxic Substances Control Act for illegal removal of asbestos-containing material at the University Court Apartments.
EPA’s complaint alleged that asbestos-containing material was improperly handled during a tank removal project involving the heating plant in the apartment complex.
The settlement was announced today by Anita Frankel, Director of the Office of Air Quality in EPA's Northwest Regional Office. "Improper handling of asbestos is very serious,” said Frankel “because it makes the fibers airborne, and can expose asbestos workers and the public to significant risk.”
Exposure to asbestos can lead to numerous asbestos related diseases including asbestosis, and lung cancer. Employers are legally required to take measures to protect their workers when carrying out such projects.
