(Boston, Mass. – March 5, 2008) The City of South Burlington, VT Bartletts Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant was recently selected by EPA for a Regional "Operations and Maintenance Wastewater Excellence Award".
The staff of the South Burlington Bartletts Bay plant, led by the late George Dow, Superintendent, Steve Crosby, Interim Superintendent, Michael Fortin, Chief Operator, and Kevin McLaughlin, Operator, was recognized by EPA's New England Office for exceptional work in operating and maintaining the plant. In addition, Chuck Hafter, City Manager, was acknowledged for the City’s outstanding support. The plant was among seven facilities in New England acknowledged for exemplary performance during 2007. The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation was instrumental in nominating this facility.
“The professionals operating these wastewater treatment plants, as well as the municipalities and the state environmental agencies that support them, are key to keeping our environment healthy. I am proud to give them the credit they deserve,” said Robert W. Varney, regional administrator of EPA's New England Office.
The EPA Regional Operations & Maintenance Excellence Award was established to recognize and honor the employees of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality with outstanding plant operations and maintenance and on-going operator training. More often than not and particularly with the smaller facilities, conscientious operators and staff continue to perform exceptionally with limited resources.
The South Burlington Bartletts Bay staff and facility were recognized on January 30th at the annual New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA) Conference in Boston. “We are extremely proud and gratified to receive this recognition from the EPA. We take great pride in the work of our plant operators and the highest quality effluent to our community”, praises Hafter. The facility will have the opportunity to be nominated for a National EPA 2008 Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award this coming spring.
In honor and in the memory of the late George Dow, South Burlington superintendent, Pam Dow, his wife, and Matthew Dow, his son, received an award plaque commemorated George’s exceptional work at the plant. George was a member of the NEWEA Executive Committee serving in the capacity of State Director from Vermont, as well as a Director for the Green Mountain Water Environment Association (GMWEA). A few of George’s many accomplishments, love for the profession, and respect for all of his fellow colleagues include receiving the NEWEA Operator of the Year Award and serving as a coach for one of the GMWEA Operations Challenge Teams. He will be dearly missed and always fondly remembered.
