EPA awards $1.3 million grant to Derry Township to upgrade sewage treatment facilities

PHILADELPHIA -- The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $1.3 million grant to the Derry Township Municipal Authority in Dauphin County, Pa. to upgrade sewage treamtment and increase capacity of the Clearwater Road wastewater treatment plant.

“This project will ensure that sewage is adequately treated, and will eliminate some of the nitrogen flowing to the Chesapeake Bay,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The funds will increase the treatment capacity of the plant from 5 million gallons per day to about 6.3 million gallons per day, and also will introduce a new treatment process known as biological nitrogen removal.

The facility, which serves Derry, Conewago and South Hanover townships in Dauphin County, discharges to Swatara Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna River.

Construction is scheduled to begin in October and should take about one year to complete. The grant will reimburse the authority for 55 percent of the project’s costs. The balance of the project is being funded with local dollars.
