EPA Settles with New Hampshire Company Over Environmental Violations

BOSTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced it has reached a settlement with a Nashua, N.H. company for violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).

The Bronze Craft Corp. makes bronze and brass castings. Under this settlement, the company will pay a cash penalty of $35,293.

The hazardous waste generated by the company included lead contaminated sand and debris, paint waste, lacquer waste and waste oil.

EPA alleged violations against the company which included inadequate hazardous waste training for employees; not properly maintaining company inspection logs; improper labeling of hazardous waste containers; not having a complete hazardous contingency plan; not properly posting complete emergency information; and not having enough aisle space in storage areas.

Many of these violations were discovered when inspectors from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services toured the company in 1991. As a result, DES ordered the company to come into compliance with environmental laws.

On Feb 9, 2000, EPA inspected the company's plant and found numerous repeat violations of RCRA requirements.

"We want this action to send a clear message that the company, as well as other companies involved in this sort of manufacturing, need to comply with environmental laws," said Ira Leighton, acting deputy regional administrator of EPA's New England office. "Clearly, these violations were failures to follow appropriate safety precautions, but they could have resulted in or amplified the effects of an improper release of hazardous waste."
