LEWISTOWN, Pa. – The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $475,100 grant to the Lewistown municipal authority in Mifflin County to help fund extension of the Lewistown drinking water system to serve 735 residents in areas along State Road 22 in Granville Township.
“This is an important step in making sure the residents of Lewistown have safe, healthy drinking water,” said Bradley Campbell, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.
The extension will serve residents in West Hills, Park Hills, and Forest Estates areas, where many private wells are at risk from contamination in surface water and bacteria entering ground water. The area has had a history of cloudy-turbid well water after significant rainfall, and elevated counts of bacteria have been recorded.
The grant funds about 55 percent of the $900,00 project, with Lewistown providing matching funds. Construction is expected to begin in June of 2000, and will take approximately nine months. The expected monthly cost for water service will be $39 per month per household.
