CHICAGO (Oct. 27, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has reached an agreement with Morton International Inc. on alleged clean-air violations at the company's salt processing plant at 151 S. Industrial St., Rittman, Ohio.
Morton has agreed to do an environmental project to protect public health and to pay a $25,000 penalty. For its environmental project, Morton will spend $74,999 to pave a gravel loading area and roadway to cut dust emissions from its facility.
The agreement resolves EPA allegations that Morton failed to comply with limits on particulate emissions (dust, smoke, ash) from its facility.
Inhaling high concentrations of particulates can affect children, the elderly and people with heart and lung diseases the most. |
